For under $3,500.

Kinja'd!!!

I've always had a thing with the early 2000's 500cc Buell Blasts. Affordable prices also, and if I'm not mistaken they can be serviced at Harley dealers.

If you like cruisers, you can get a low mileage middle-weight cruiser from $3k and under. My buddy bought a Yamaha 650 cruiser with 1,800 miles for $1,500 recently.

I'm not big into cruisers. I'm more into Standard/Sportbikes.

I feel the same way, definitely more into sportsbikes and standards. I believe supersports retain their value more than standards. If you're looking for the most bike for the money you're probably better off with a standard, perhaps an mid 2000's FZ6

Yeah, I'm looking to up it a bit from Standards. I'm not overly in the market right now though. Supersports are quite expensive though, I'd love a Hayabusa. My wallet would not love a Hayabusa.

Why a Hayabusa? Contrary to popular belief, a Hayabusa is not a true supersport. Its a sports tourer. It's unbelievably fast no doubt, but it has some compromises for comfort and cruising that a supersport does not.

Don't know. I've always liked the looks. A Gsxr, or a Duc Diavel would be my next choices though.

No doubt there's sexy motorcycles, but people try to ride them like they're sportsbikes and they just can't handle because of the weight. It weighs almost 150 pounds more than the sportsbike I'm looking to buy, the Daytona 675R.

I've had a GSX-R 600 and it was pretty much indestructible. 25k+ miles and the motor was still strong.

While the Diavel is a good "cruiser", it's not even the best one coming out of Italy right now (See Moto Guzzi Cali 1400)

Forgot about Triumph for a second. The Daytona 675R is a great looking bike.

The Yamaha Fz-09, blue wheels and gold forks was tempting.

Any opinions about Hyosung? Cheap prices from them, probably low quality though.

If I were to get a bike, it would be a monster. Excellent choice

I like the 675R because it has the top shelf Ohlin's suspension and M50 Brembo's found on bikes twice the price.

The FZ-09 is an interesting bike. The suspension is supposedly way too soft and the brakes are not up to par. I can't say for sure as I haven't ridden it, but for about $8,000, it looks like a good value. I really liked the FZ-8 though, so if this is a natural progression of that bike, it should be great.

Regarding Hyosung, would you want to buy a bike from a company best known for making ATM's? They're dirt cheap so it's tempting to pull the trigger on that good looking 250 sports bike they have, but who knows what the build quality is like on that thing. I don't foresee them putting serious pressure on the well established brands.

Yeah, I really liked what Yamaha did with the Fz8, so the expectations for the Fz-9 would be higher.
I too don't see Hyosung taking a big grip on the Us market either. Low prices and all, but probably sub par build quality I'm guessing. I do see the 250 Comet as being more bike for the money than the Honda Grom, that thing is not suited for tall people.

We've established that you're looking for a standard/sport bike for <$3,500. How much riding experience do you have? In miles, not years. You shouldn't really be jumping on a huge displacement bike unless you've got some good miles under you.

I've got around 5,600 miles. I'm probably looking for a 650, if I have enough miles under my belt.

BUELL! I HAD THAT BIKE AS MY FIRST!!!

if u want the most bike for under 3500, look for a suzuki Sv650 (my second bike) early models can be found for tht price, and they are decent bikes.

I'll take a look around for Sv650's. I'm probably looking for a 600.

when it worked, it was a good little bike.

sadly for it, it had reliability problems. fixable if u had the time, and it was a great little run around....but..

(oh, we bought ours brand new, so can be blamed on PO) sold it at i think ...5000km
wiring harness died. needed to be replaced. left my without a motor on the FREEWAY
commuting on the main road. carb fell off .TWICE. (harley didnt actually mount the carb to anything....it was just being held on by the throttle cable and the 2 rubber boots. 1 for the motor, one for the air box. because of 500cc of raw thump, it would just chew through the front boot. i ended up getting a pipe connector with a steel sleeve instead.

no gas gauge, no rev count. u get a speedo and 4 idiot lights. turn signals, neutral, oil, high beam

THAT being said...id buy it back in heartbeat. IT WAS DA THUMP. but seriously, no one knew what it was. me and a friend of mine went to a local bike meet, and he was riding a BMW R1200GS adeventure anniversery edition. my little buell got more attention then him. he was pissed.

the SV has ONE glaring flaw. soft suspension. if u find one only, try to make sure the PO did something about it. most favored are GSX-R front end swaps. but other then that, its a perfect bike. 75 hp for the second gen, looks good, AND you can run it fully faired or as a naked, which ever suits ur fancy at the time. make for a GREAt commuting bike (i consistently get over 50mpg, even with fun riding) and the after market suport on the forums is amazing. granted, ur not going to be making more then 80 hp, motor dont seem to like it. but u have the torque low down and if u know how to ride, you will keep up with a 600 in the twisty stuff. also: V-twin noise.

its pretty much a poor mans ducati. ducati looks (nake version), sound, riding style. suzuki ergos (nicer) and insurance and maintenance (also much nicer)

You should be fine on just about anything with that much experience. I know guys who'll say "I've been riding for 20 years!" yet they don't have nearly that many miles.

The next thing you'll have to consider is which type of engine matches your riding style. A v-twin typically offers a milder torque curve better suited for more relaxed, everyday riding. You won't have to rev the tits off it to get usable power because the mapping and the cams are designed for low and mid range torque. It will usually have a much lower redline than an inline four. The tranny will likely have wider gear ratios, and first gear won't be insanely tall. These reasons are why v-twins are the engine of choice for cruisers, and many standards and adventure bikes utilize them as well.

The inline four is the typical sports bike engine. Their characteristics will vary based on the application. On a supersport, you're not going to be producing very much torque under 3k rpm, but you're rewarded with a shot of power at the top end equivalent to fighter jet catapulting off the edge of a aircraft carrier. However, riding a supersport at low speeds is a pain because of the insanely tall gearing. You don't really need a bike that goes 90+mph in first gear for commuting. In a milder state of tune, as in an Fz6, you'll have a more balanced torque curve but you'll still have to keep the revs up to have fun.

Personally, I absolutely love the sound of a screaming inline four at double digit rpms. Nothing else does it for me.

Basically, what I'd recommend for you is a Suzuki Sv650. It's well balanced bike in all respects. If you really want a supersport, like a GSX-R as you mentioned, stay in the 600cc range. No need for literbikes.

Yeah, I'm happy with Suzuki, they make good products. I'm probably not going to get a Gsxr, the only ones in my price range have been down, or have major mechanical issues.
